世の中には歴史に残る演説がたくさんありますが、この演説はご存じでしょうか？
『独裁者』（原題：The Great Dictator）という映画の最後のシーンでの演説です。
この映画は（以下、Wikipediaから引用）1940年に公開したアメリカ映画で、チャールズ・チャップリンが監督・製作・脚本・主演を務めた。チャップリンがアドルフ・ヒトラーの独裁政治を批判した作品で、ヒトラーとナチズムに対して非常に大胆に非難と風刺をしつつ、ヨーロッパにおけるユダヤ人の苦況をコミカルながらも生々しく描いている。

この演説は2年ほど前にYoutubeの関連動画で見つけたのですが、初めて観たときは鳥肌が立ちました。

and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we
have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded
the world with hate, has goose-stepped
us into misery and bloodshed.
この世界には、全人類が暮らせるだけの場所があり、大地は豊かで、皆に恵みを与えてくれる。人生の生き方は自由で美しい。しかし、私たちは生き方を見失ってしまったのだ。欲が人の魂を毒し、憎しみと共に世界を閉鎖し、不幸、惨劇へと私たちを行進させた。
We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
私たちはスピードを開発したが、それによって自分自身を孤立させた。ゆとりを与えてくれる機械により、貧困を作り上げた。

Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard
and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than
cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost.

Soldiers, don’t give yourselves to brutes
— men who despise
you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you
what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
兵士たちよ。 獣たちに身を託してはいけない。君たちを見下し、奴隷にし、人生を操る者たちは、君たちが何をし、何を考え、何を感じるかを指図し、そして、君たちを仕込み、食べ物を制限する者たちは、君たちを家畜として、単なるコマとして扱うのだ。
Don’t give yourselves to
these unnatural men! Machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You
are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of
humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate. Only the
unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.

兵士よ。奴隷を作るために闘うな。自由のために闘え。『ルカによる福音書』の１７章に、「神の国は人間の中にある」と書かれている。一人の人間ではなく、一部の人間でもなく、全ての人間の中なのだ。君たちの中になんだ。
You, the people, have the power! The power
to create machines. The power to create happiness. You the people have the
power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful
adventure.

Then in the name of

They do not fulfill that promise. They never will. Dictators free themselves,

そんな約束をしながら獣たちも権力を伸ばしてきたが、奴らを嘘をつく。約束を果たさない。これからも果たしはしないだろう。独裁者たちは自分たちを自由し、人々を奴隷にする。

Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us
fight to free the world. To do
away with national barriers. To do away with greed with hate and intolerance.
今こそ、約束を実現させるために闘おう。世界を自由にするために、国境のバリアを失くすために、憎しみと耐え切れない苦しみと一緒に貪欲を失くすために闘おう。
Let us fight for a world of reason. A
world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of
democracy, let us all unite!
理性のある世界のために、科学と進歩が全人類の幸福へと導いてくれる世界のために闘おう。兵士たちよ。民主国家の名のもとに、皆でひとつになろう。
